Arunachal Pradesh Governor Urges Collective Responsibility to Maintain Cleanliness in Itanagar

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik (Retd) has called upon citizens, civic bodies, and all stakeholders to take shared responsibility for keeping Itanagar — the state capital — clean, green, and hygienic. Emphasizing that cleanliness is not solely the duty of municipal authorities but a collective civic obligation, the Governor highlighted the need for sustained community participation to preserve the natural beauty and livability of the capital region.

Speaking at a high-level review meeting on urban sanitation and waste management in Itanagar, the Governor stressed the following key points:

  • Community Ownership — Every resident, shopkeeper, institution, and vehicle owner must contribute to waste segregation, proper disposal, and preventing littering in public spaces.
  • Zero Tolerance for Open Dumping — Strict enforcement against illegal dumping sites, roadside garbage accumulation, and open defecation, with prompt action against violators.
  • Swachhata as a Way of Life — Cleanliness drives and awareness campaigns should be regular rather than occasional, involving schools, colleges, NGOs, self-help groups, and youth organizations.
  • Infrastructure & Enforcement — Strengthening solid waste management systems, improving door-to-door collection, upgrading dumping grounds, and ensuring functional public toilets across the city.
  • Green Itanagar Vision — Integrating tree plantation, river and nullah cleaning, and plastic waste reduction into daily civic routines to make Itanagar a model clean capital in the Northeast.

The Governor appreciated the efforts of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC), local ward committees, and volunteers who have been organizing cleanliness drives but urged for greater consistency and scale. He directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan with timelines, measurable targets, and public reporting mechanisms to track progress.

Lt Gen Parnaik also encouraged citizens to adopt the motto “My Itanagar – My Responsibility”, reminding everyone that a cleaner capital enhances public health, tourism appeal, environmental sustainability, and overall quality of life for residents.

This renewed push aligns with national Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines and the state’s broader goal of making Arunachal Pradesh’s urban centers exemplars of cleanliness and civic pride.
