Authorities in Arunachal Pradesh have issued an urgent travel advisory for the strategic Mayodia Pass route in Lower Dibang Valley district due to an impending heavy snowfall warning. The advisory comes as weather forecasts predict significant accumulation of snow over the coming days, raising serious safety concerns for commuters and travelers.
The Lower Dibang Valley Police, through an official notification, have imposed the following restrictions and guidelines:
- All non-essential travel along the Mayodia route is strongly discouraged until further notice.
- Only emergency and essential service vehicles (including medical, security forces, and essential supplies transport) will be permitted with prior permission.
- Light motor vehicles, two-wheelers, and tourist vehicles are completely prohibited from using the route during the snowfall period.
- Heavy vehicles must carry mandatory safety equipment, including chains, shovels, and sufficient fuel, and should travel only in convoys under police or BRO supervision.
The Mayodia Pass, a critical high-altitude link connecting Roing (district headquarters) with Dibang Valley and parts of eastern Arunachal, frequently experiences hazardous winter conditions, including sudden blizzards, reduced visibility, road blockages, and avalanche risks. The pass remains one of the most challenging stretches in the Northeast, especially during the winter months.
Police officials have urged residents and tourists to:
- Monitor official weather updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local administration.
- Avoid unnecessary journeys and plan travel only after confirming safe road conditions.
- Keep emergency contact numbers handy and inform family members of travel plans.
- Cooperate fully with security forces and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel deployed for snow clearance and traffic management.
The advisory is part of proactive measures to prevent accidents, vehicle stranding, and loss of life in remote, high-altitude areas where rescue operations become extremely difficult during severe weather.
Travelers are advised to check for real-time updates from the Lower Dibang Valley district administration, police control room, or BRO before attempting the route.
