Security forces in Manipur have dealt a significant blow to two major insurgent groups by apprehending female operatives from the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) who were actively involved in extortion and fundraising operations.
The arrests took place during coordinated operations conducted by a joint team of Manipur Police commandos and central forces in different parts of the state. The crackdown targeted individuals suspected of collecting “taxes” and levies from civilians, businesses, and government contractors under duress.
Key details of the operation include:
- UNLF Operative: A woman identified as a key member of the proscribed UNLF outfit was detained from the Imphal valley region. She is accused of coordinating extortion demands from local traders and service providers, channeling funds to support militant activities.
- KCP Operative: Another female cadre linked to the KCP was nabbed in a separate location. Authorities recovered incriminating documents, mobile phones, and cash believed to be part of the extortion proceeds during the search.
Police sources revealed that both women were allegedly using intimidation tactics, including threats of violence, to enforce collection of illegal levies. The funds were reportedly being used to sustain insurgent logistics, procure arms, and finance other subversive operations.
The Manipur Police have registered cases under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Indian Penal Code, and Arms Act. Interrogation of the arrested operatives is underway to gather intelligence on their networks, handlers, and broader extortion ecosystem operating in the state.
This latest action is part of intensified counter-insurgency efforts aimed at dismantling the financial backbone of militant groups amid ongoing ethnic tensions and security challenges in Manipur. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to strict enforcement against anyone involved in funding terrorism or disturbing public order.
