Police in Assam’s Gossaigaon subdivision have arrested a 56-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl in a shocking case that has sparked outrage in the local community.
The incident reportedly occurred in a remote village under Gossaigaon police station limits. According to preliminary investigations, the accused lured the minor victim with inducements before committing the crime. The child’s family noticed her distress and reported the matter to the authorities, leading to swift police action.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the girl’s parents, officers registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The suspect was apprehended within hours and is currently in custody.
Authorities have assured that a thorough probe is underway, with forensic evidence collection and medical examination of the victim already completed. Senior police officials have emphasized zero tolerance for crimes against children and promised stringent legal proceedings.
This arrest comes amid heightened public concern over child safety in rural areas of Assam. Community leaders and child rights activists have called for stronger preventive measures, including awareness campaigns and better policing in vulnerable pockets.
The case has once again highlighted the urgent need for robust implementation of child protection laws and swift justice delivery in Northeast India.
