Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Exudes Confidence in BJP’s Electoral Triumph, Credits PM Modi for Landmark Infrastructure Boosts

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced unshakeable optimism about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) sweeping success in the forthcoming Assembly elections, declaring that no force can impede their path to victory under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stewardship. His remarks underscore a narrative of unprecedented development and unity driving the state’s progress.

Speaking at the BJP’s ‘Booth Vijay Sankalp Sabha’ event in Guwahati, Sarma spotlighted transformative central government projects reshaping Assam’s landscape. He particularly lauded the approval of an ambitious underwater road-cum-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River, linking Gohpur and Numaligarh, as a monumental gift from the Prime Minister.

“This election cycle, we’re poised to shatter records with our wins. The Prime Minister has delivered on our aspirations for Assam. We’ve now got highways capable of accommodating aircraft landings. Just yesterday, the Union Cabinet greenlit Rs 18,000 crore for this groundbreaking underwater tunnel between Gohpur and Numaligarh. What once seemed beyond imagination is now a reality under PM Modi’s guidance,” Sarma proclaimed.

He recalled initial skepticism surrounding proposals like the elevated corridor in Kaziranga and this tunnel, but affirmed, “With Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm, no obstacle can block our forward march to victory.”

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has sanctioned this four-lane greenfield connectivity project from NH-15 at Gohpur to NH-715 at Numaligarh, featuring a 15.79 km tunnel. Budgeted at Rs 18,662 crore and executed via the Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) model, it promises to slash the current six-hour journey—via the Kaliabhomora bridge through Kaziranga National Park and Biswanath Town—while enhancing regional links.

This pioneering tunnel marks India’s debut in underwater road-cum-rail infrastructure and ranks as the world’s second such facility. It is set to catalyze economic growth by streamlining freight transport, cutting logistics expenses, and fostering socio-economic upliftment not just in Assam but also in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Earlier that day, PM Modi dedicated the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, a Rs 3,030 crore six-lane extradosed prestressed concrete bridge spanning the Brahmaputra, connecting Guwahati to North Guwahati. As the Northeast’s first of its kind, the bridge incorporates seismic-resilient features like friction pendulum bearings for base isolation, high-strength stay cables, and an integrated Bridge Health Monitoring System for real-time oversight and enhanced durability.

In addition, the Prime Minister rolled out a slew of development schemes exceeding Rs 5,450 crore, aimed at fortifying connectivity, digital ecosystems, higher education, and urban transport across the Northeast.

Sarma’s address reflects the BJP’s emphasis on infrastructure-led advancement and collective resolve, positioning Assam as a key beneficiary of national initiatives and rallying support for electoral dominance.
