The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) is set to hold its 27th General Conference-cum-Election from February 17 to 23, 2026, but the event has already triggered widespread concerns over student safety and potential academic disruptions in the state.
Two prominent venues have declined to host the high-profile gathering. Dera Natung Government College in Itanagar refused citing the ongoing academic calendar and citing past incidents of unrest and property damage during similar student events. Similarly, the Siddhartha Hall at Thupten Gyatsaling Monastery faced strong opposition from local residents, who feared disturbances to daily life and communal harmony.
The timing of the conference has raised eyebrows, coinciding with critical board examinations across Arunachal Pradesh. The State Board exams for Classes III and XI are already underway, while Classes V and VIII are scheduled for February 18 and 19. CBSE board exams begin from February 15, putting immense pressure on students preparing for these crucial tests.
Adding to the tension, unverified reports emerged of gunfire near the AAPSU office during the voter registration process, prompting an ongoing police investigation. There are also unconfirmed allegations of underground groups attempting to influence student unions, particularly in eastern districts of the state.
Student leaders and educationists have voiced serious worries about the rising influence of money and external political interference in campus politics, which they say is compromising the democratic spirit of student bodies.
AAPSU, long regarded as the strongest advocate for Arunachalee students, now finds itself at a crossroads. Stakeholders are urging authorities, political parties, and civil society to ensure the elections remain peaceful, transparent, and free from any form of violence or intimidation.
The upcoming conference is expected to elect new office-bearers who will lead the union’s fight on key issues like education reforms, hostel facilities, and student welfare across the state.
