Assam Government Boosts Orthodox Tea Subsidy to Rs 15 per Kg, Targets Surge in International Exports

In a strategic push to revitalize the global standing of Assam’s renowned tea industry, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has unveiled a significant subsidy enhancement for orthodox tea production. The support will rise from Rs 10 per kilogram to Rs 15 per kilogram, aiming to propel exports and capitalize on India’s recent Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with major markets.

The announcement comes as part of broader efforts to harness tariff reductions under FTAs with the United Kingdom and the European Union, alongside anticipated benefits from an upcoming pact with the United States. Sarma highlighted the resurgence in Assam tea’s international appeal, noting a reversal in previous declines.

“Assam tea exports, which had dipped earlier, are now on an upward trajectory. Orthodox tea output, after a period of slowdown, has seen a remarkable revival. This year’s indicators are highly promising,” stated the Chief Minister during a press interaction.

The decision followed consultations with prominent tea associations in the state, ensuring alignment with industry needs. This increased financial incentive is designed to make premium orthodox tea more viable in competitive global arenas, where its artisanal processing—emphasizing whole leaves and rich flavors—commands strong demand.

Historically, orthodox tea from Assam has faced challenges from international rivals and fluctuating markets, impacting production volumes. However, recent state interventions have driven record-breaking yields and export growth, setting the stage for what Sarma describes as a potential “golden era” for the sector.

Tea industry leaders have applauded the move, seeing it as a crucial step to enhance market edge, support local growers, and solidify Assam’s position as a top exporter of high-quality teas.

This initiative not only promises economic uplift for thousands of tea estate workers and farmers but also aligns with national goals to expand agricultural exports from Northeast India.
