In a strategic realignment within the Assam wing of the Indian National Congress, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has transferred the crucial responsibility of coordinating opposition alliances from Lok Sabha Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi to former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah. This move is sparking intense discussions in the state’s political landscape as parties gear up for a unified challenge against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Assembly elections.
According to insights from party insiders, Gaurav Gogoi has been officially relieved from handling alliance talks, paving the way for Borah to spearhead negotiations in critical constituencies. The timing is pivotal, with regional outfits and opposition groups actively exploring coalitions to counter the BJP’s dominance.
Raijor Dal President and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi brought this development to light, stating that Borah’s appointment reflects his “greater political practicality” compared to Gogoi. This remark has fueled speculation about internal dynamics and potential adjustments in Congress’s strategy for Assam.
Adding urgency to the alliance-building process, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) President Lurinjyoti Gogoi has voiced frustration over sluggish progress in discussions, imposing a one-week ultimatum for concrete advancements.
However, the Congress has categorically refuted any suggestions of discord between Gaurav Gogoi and Bhupen Borah. APCC Spokesperson Reetam Singh dismissed the narratives as fabricated attempts to sow division, attributing Akhil Gogoi’s comments to tactical sarcasm aimed at strengthening bargaining positions in alliance deliberations. Singh clarified that Borah’s prior role as committee chairperson naturally positions him to lead these efforts.
Emphasizing a collaborative ethos, Singh highlighted Gaurav Gogoi’s advocacy for decentralizing power and embracing team leadership. He noted that Gogoi is empowering veteran figures like Bhupen Borah, Pradyut Bordoloi, Debabrata Saikia, Rakibul Hussain, and Mira Borthakur to drive a cohesive campaign toward electoral success.
Singh further alleged that such “imaginary conflicts” are being orchestrated by a rattled BJP in Assam to undermine opposition unity.
This reshuffle underscores the evolving strategies in Assam’s opposition camp, potentially reshaping alliances and electoral battles in the Northeast.
