Meghalaya Coal Mine Explosion: Fatalities Climb to 28 as Judicial Investigation Launched

The tragic explosion at an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has claimed 28 lives, with authorities confirming the latest death of an injured miner during medical care in Shillong. This incident has spotlighted ongoing safety lapses and unauthorized mining operations in the region, prompting swift governmental and judicial responses.

Police officials reported that the victim, identified as Raju Tamang, passed away while being treated at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIMS). The blast took place in a clandestine coal extraction site located in the isolated Thangsku locality within Mynsngat village.

In response to the growing outcry, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma declared that the state administration will initiate a thorough judicial probe. This inquiry aims to uncover the root causes of the detonation and determine accountability for those involved in the mishap.

Concurrently, the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police from East Jaintia Hills presented themselves before the Meghalaya High Court to address queries related to the disaster. The court voiced deep apprehension about the explosion and the persistent problem of illicit coal mining across the state. It has demanded a comprehensive account from officials detailing the measures implemented to halt these illegal practices.

Authorities further noted that eight individuals who sustained injuries in the blast continue to receive medical attention at multiple healthcare facilities.

This event underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement against unregulated mining, which has long plagued Meghalaya’s hilly terrains, endangering workers and the environment alike. As the judicial process unfolds, stakeholders hope for enhanced regulations to prevent future calamities in the coal-rich Northeast.
