Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha has issued a strong warning, promising to bring to light all instances of alleged unethical behavior within the Tipra Motha Party-led Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). He asserted that the state administration has complete knowledge of the council’s internal affairs and operations.
In a press interaction, Saha highlighted concerns over the council’s handling of finances, particularly its failure to disburse pensions to former staff members. He attributed this shortfall to poor financial practices, noting that neither the central nor state governments allocate separate funds for such payouts. Instead, these obligations rely on the council’s own prudent budgeting and spending from its existing resources. The TTAADC, headquartered in Khumulwng, has been criticized for not maintaining fiscal discipline, leading to these payment delays.
Saha also pointed fingers at the council for postponing elections to Village Committees (VCs). He claimed the leadership has disregarded legal requirements by not transferring authority upon the completion of its term, especially after forming additional committees. Originally slated for early 2021, polls for 587 VCs remain pending, which Saha said is hampering public welfare. Nevertheless, he assured that the state government continues to execute development projects efficiently and on schedule.
Dismissing Tipra Motha’s assertions of resolving the protracted Reang refugee crisis, the Chief Minister described the successful resettlement as the result of a prolonged 23-year effort, urging against any single entity claiming sole credit. Similarly, he refuted the party’s role in the repatriation of former insurgents from the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), crediting his administration for spearheading the move. Saha mentioned that the central government has approved Rs 250 crore for the rehabilitation package under a peace agreement, with active steps to engage political figures in fostering lasting harmony.
In a separate note, the Chief Minister extended a warm reception to 413 members from various political backgrounds who have aligned with the BJP-IPFT coalition, signaling growing support for the alliance.
This escalation underscores ongoing political tensions in Tripura, with implications for governance, tribal autonomy, and regional stability in Northeast India.
