India-US Trade Deal Reflects Rising Global Influence Under Modi: Arunachal CM Pema Khandu

Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh – Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has hailed the recently concluded India-US bilateral trade agreement as powerful evidence of India’s growing stature on the global stage under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The CM described the deal as a landmark achievement that underscores the country’s enhanced negotiating power, economic confidence, and strategic positioning in the international arena.

Speaking to reporters after reviewing the key contours of the agreement, Khandu emphasized that such high-profile trade pacts were unthinkable for India in earlier decades and reflect the decisive shift in global perception toward New Delhi since 2014.

CM Highlights Transformative Impact of Modi Era Diplomacy

Pema Khandu pointed to several factors that have enabled India to secure favourable terms in the trade negotiations with the United States:

  • Strong and consistent economic growth trajectory
  • Robust domestic manufacturing push through initiatives like Make in India and PLI schemes
  • Strategic autonomy combined with deeper integration into global supply chains
  • Enhanced geopolitical leverage as a counterweight in Indo-Pacific dynamics
  • Prime Minister Modi’s personal diplomatic outreach and credibility among world leaders

“The India-US trade deal is not just about tariffs and market access—it’s a clear message to the world that India negotiates from a position of strength today,” Khandu stated. “Under PM Modi’s vision, we have moved from being seen as a developing nation seeking concessions to one that commands respect as an equal partner.”

He further noted that the agreement opens significant opportunities for sectors critical to Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast, including agro-processing, bamboo-based industries, horticulture exports, handlooms, and eco-tourism-related services.

Potential Benefits for Arunachal Pradesh & Northeast

The CM outlined specific areas where the state could capitalize on the enhanced bilateral trade framework:

  • Easier access to US markets for organic produce, medicinal plants, and value-added bamboo products from Arunachal
  • Increased investment interest from American firms in green energy, hydropower equipment, and sustainable tourism infrastructure
  • Boost to skill development and youth employment through potential collaborations in education, technology transfer, and vocational training
  • Strengthening of Act East Policy linkages via improved trade corridors connecting Northeast India with ASEAN and beyond

Khandu reiterated that the deal aligns perfectly with the Centre’s focus on eastern and northeastern development, including schemes like Purvodaya, Vibrant Villages, and expanded UDAN air connectivity.

Broader National Significance

The Arunachal leader used the occasion to contrast the current phase of India’s global engagement with previous eras, crediting PM Modi for building an assertive yet inclusive foreign policy that balances national interest with international cooperation.

“This is the India of 2026—economically vibrant, diplomatically confident, and geopolitically relevant,” he concluded. “Every such agreement strengthens our resolve to make Arunachal Pradesh and the entire Northeast active participants in India’s rise rather than mere spectators.”

The CM’s comments come at a time when multiple Northeastern states are witnessing accelerated infrastructure development and investor interest, partly fuelled by India’s rising global profile and improved bilateral ties with major economies like the United States.
