Arunachal Pradesh Attracts Global Interest in Geothermal and Hydrogen at India Energy Week 2026

Goa, India – Arunachal Pradesh positioned itself as an emerging powerhouse in clean and renewable energy by actively engaging global investors and partners during India Energy Week 2026. The state showcased its promising geothermal potential and hydrogen exploration opportunities, drawing attention at the prestigious India–Iceland Roundtable Conference held on the sidelines of the flagship event from January 27 to 30.

Represented by the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), Arunachal highlighted its proactive steps in geothermal research and emerging hydrogen prospects, aiming to secure international collaborations that could accelerate sustainable energy development in the Northeast.

Strong Pitch for Clean Energy Investments

At the ONGC Training Centre in Goa, Arunachal Pradesh made a compelling case for strategic partnerships in geothermal energy and hydrogen sectors. The state’s delegation participated in high-level discussions focusing on geothermal assessment, exploration, white hydrogen potential, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and underground hydrogen storage solutions.

This outreach aligns with India’s broader push toward a low-carbon future, where Arunachal’s unique geological features offer untapped advantages for clean energy innovation.

Geothermal Initiatives Gain International Recognition

The Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) has established a solid foundation in geothermal development across Northeast India. Key highlights include:

  • Recent drilling operations in Dirang, West Kameng district, conducted in partnership with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and Geotropy of Iceland.
  • Ongoing geothermal surveys in Tawang, executed in collaboration with Oil India Limited (OIL).

These projects demonstrate Arunachal’s commitment to ground-level exploration and assessment. CESHS received notable appreciation from Indian and Icelandic delegates, including OIL representatives, for its effective presence and forward-thinking approach in harnessing geothermal resources.

Exploring Hydrogen Opportunities in Ophiolite Belts

Discussions at the roundtable spotlighted Arunachal Pradesh’s potential as a hub for hydrogen exploration, particularly white hydrogen in the state’s ophiolite belts. Proposals for collaboration on underground hydrogen storage— involving NGI, OIL, and CESHS—were explored to bolster India’s long-term energy security.

Such initiatives position the Himalayan state as a key player in emerging clean energy technologies, complementing its abundant hydropower resources with innovative geothermal and hydrogen pathways.

Leadership and Collaborative Momentum

Led by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, the Indian delegation included scientists and experts from Arunachal Pradesh. Tana Tage, Director of CESHS, represented the state and contributed to the geothermal-focused deliberations with Iceland.

The roundtable fostered exchanges among global energy leaders, policymakers, and researchers, emphasizing sustainable solutions like geothermal energy, CCS, and hydrogen storage to address global energy challenges.

Future Prospects for Arunachal’s Energy Sector

By actively wooing international players, Arunachal Pradesh seeks to attract investments that can transform its natural advantages into viable, large-scale clean energy projects. These efforts not only enhance India’s energy transition goals but also promise economic benefits, job creation, and environmental sustainability for the region’s communities.

As global interest grows in renewable and emerging energy sources, Arunachal’s proactive participation at India Energy Week 2026 signals a promising chapter for the state’s role in India’s clean energy landscape.
