NSCN-KYA Cadre Surrenders in Longding District Following Joint Security Operation in Arunachal Pradesh

Longding, Arunachal Pradesh – Security forces achieved a significant breakthrough in counter-insurgency efforts when an active cadre of the NSCN–Khaplang–Yung Aung (NSCN-KYA) voluntarily surrendered after a targeted joint operation in Longding district. The development, occurring on January 19, highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led actions combined with sustained counseling to encourage militants to abandon violence and reintegrate into mainstream society.

The surrendered individual was handed over to police custody, marking another step toward restoring peace in this insurgency-prone border region of Arunachal Pradesh.

Intelligence-Driven Operation Leads to Surrender

Acting on precise intelligence about the presence of an active insurgent in and around Longding Bazaar, a coordinated operation was launched by personnel from the Khonsa and Longding Battalions of the Assam Rifles, working closely with the Arunachal Pradesh Police. Ground sources played a crucial role in establishing contact with the cadre.

After several hours of dialogue, counseling, negotiations, and motivational outreach, the individual responded positively and agreed to lay down arms. He renounced the path of violence, expressing willingness to return to civilian life.

The surrendered cadre was taken into custody by the joint team and formally handed over to Longding Police Station for legal proceedings under relevant laws.

Profile of the Surrendered Cadre

The individual has been identified as Akha, also known as Khawang Wangsu (38), a resident of Longphong village under Pangchau Circle in Longding district. Reports indicate he had joined the NSCN-KYA in September 2025, making his association relatively recent before opting to surrender.

No specific details on weapons or other recoveries were mentioned in connection with this incident, with the focus remaining on the voluntary nature of the surrender facilitated through persuasion rather than confrontation.

Commitment to Peace and Rehabilitation

Officials from the Assam Rifles emphasized that the surrender exemplifies the security forces’ ongoing dedication to peace-building in insurgency-affected areas. Through calibrated counter-insurgency measures, active community engagement, and rehabilitation programs for misguided youth, authorities aim to foster normalcy and prevent disruptive activities—particularly with Republic Day approaching.

This approach has proven effective in eastern Arunachal Pradesh, where sustained outreach encourages cadres to choose dialogue over conflict, contributing to reduced militant influence in border districts like Longding.

The NSCN-KYA, a faction operating in parts of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, continues to face pressure from security operations that prioritize both enforcement and rehabilitation.

As such surrenders accumulate, they signal growing momentum toward lasting stability in the region, with security agencies and local administration working in tandem to support reintegration and community safety.
