‘Proud Father’: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Applauds Son Nandil’s Ironman 70.3 Triumph in Bahrain

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed immense pride in his son Nandil Sarma’s remarkable achievement at the Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Bahrain, hailing it as a testament to perseverance and grit. The 24-year-old law student completed the grueling half-Ironman race on December 5, finishing in an impressive 6 hours and 48 minutes after just three to four months of dedicated preparation.

The Ironman 70.3, one of the world’s most demanding endurance events, challenges participants with a 1.9-kilometre open-water swim, a 90-kilometre cycling leg, and a 21.1-kilometre run—all completed in a single, unrelenting push without breaks. Nandil’s feat, accomplished under Bahrain’s intense conditions, has not only highlighted his personal resolve but also inspired fitness enthusiasts across Assam and the Northeast.

A Father’s Heartfelt Tribute

Taking to social media shortly after the race, CM Sarma shared a glowing post celebrating his son’s milestone. “Nandil has completed the Ironman 70.3 in Bahrain in one continuous push. I am a proud father today,” he wrote, underscoring the emotional weight of witnessing Nandil conquer such a formidable test of endurance.

The Chief Minister extended his best wishes for Nandil’s next challenge: attempting the full Ironman triathlon before graduating from National Law University (NLU) in Bengaluru in May 2026. The full-distance event doubles the distances—a 3.8-km swim, 180-km bike ride, and 42.2-km marathon—pushing athletes to their absolute limits over 17 to 20 hours.

“Wishing Nandil strength, joy, and the courage to keep pushing his limits as he prepares for the full-distance Ironman,” Sarma added, blending paternal encouragement with a broader message of resilience.

Nandil’s Journey: From Law Student to Endurance Athlete

Nandil Sarma, pursuing his legal studies at NLU Bengaluru, balances academics with a burgeoning passion for multisport challenges. His Bahrain victory comes after intensive training that honed his swimming, cycling, and running prowess in a remarkably short timeframe. Sources close to the family reveal that Nandil’s foray into triathlons stems from a desire to embrace holistic fitness, drawing inspiration from global athletes who embody discipline and mental fortitude.

The young Sarma’s accomplishment has resonated deeply in Assam, where triathlons are gaining traction among the youth amid a rising focus on adventure sports. His story aligns with the state’s growing sports ecosystem, bolstered by initiatives like the Khelo India programme and regional endurance events.

Broader Inspiration Amid Family Legacy

As the son of a prominent political figure, Nandil’s achievement adds a personal dimension to CM Sarma’s public persona, often seen championing youth empowerment and wellness. The Chief Minister, known for his advocacy of physical fitness, has previously promoted marathons and cycling drives in Assam to combat sedentary lifestyles.

Nandil’s Bahrain triumph serves as a powerful motivator for aspiring athletes, proving that with focused effort, even half-Ironman distances are within reach. As he gears up for the full Ironman, eyes across the Northeast will be on this young trailblazer, whose blend of intellect and athleticism embodies the spirit of a new generation.

The Ironman series, originating in Hawaii in 1978, has evolved into a global phenomenon, with events like Bahrain’s drawing elite competitors and amateurs alike. Nandil’s entry into this arena not only honors his family’s legacy of public service but also spotlights Assam’s untapped potential in endurance sports.
