Assam Rifles and Local Police Orchestrate Peaceful Yielding of 23-Year-Old Insurgent, Recovering Pistol Amid Intelligence-Led Operation
In a significant stride toward fostering peace in Arunachal Pradesh’s border regions, a 23-year-old cadre from the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has voluntarily surrendered to security forces in Tirap district. The development, hailed as a testament to robust inter-agency collaboration, underscores ongoing initiatives to encourage insurgents to abandon violence and embrace civilian life.
The self-styled private, identified as Kamal Akhan alias Vikas Mohanta, laid down his arms following precise intelligence inputs and advanced surveillance tracking his movements in the area. A coordinated effort by the Assam Rifles, Arunachal Pradesh Police, and state police teams culminated in the peaceful handover, preventing potential escalation and paving the way for legal proceedings and rehabilitation support.
During the surrender, Mohanta deposited a 7.65 mm pistol equipped with a single magazine containing six rounds of ammunition, which was immediately secured and transferred to police custody alongside the individual. This recovery not only neutralizes an immediate threat but also highlights the effectiveness of proactive monitoring in volatile frontier zones.
Security officials praised the seamless synergy among the forces involved, noting that such operations reflect a broader commitment to guiding former militants back into the societal fold. “This successful outcome exemplifies the power of unified intelligence and outreach efforts, reinforcing our resolve to bring all insurgents into the mainstream through dialogue and opportunity,” a senior officer remarked, emphasizing the role of rehabilitation protocols in sustaining long-term stability.
The incident in Tirap, a district long sensitive due to its proximity to international borders, aligns with intensified campaigns to dismantle insurgent networks and promote development in underserved areas. With Mohanta now under formal custody for further formalities, authorities are optimistic about inspiring similar surrenders, fostering a secure environment that supports economic growth and community harmony in Arunachal Pradesh.
