Assam Tai Ahom Unity Rally Lights Up Margherita in Fierce Push for Tribal Rights and Self-Governance

Over 10,000 Strong March Through Town Demands Long-Awaited ST Status and Autonomous Council, Slams Governments for Decade of Broken Promises

A sea of flaming torches transformed the streets of Margherita into a beacon of defiance as thousands of Tai Ahom community members united in a powerful evening procession, amplifying their unyielding call for Scheduled Tribe (ST) recognition and the establishment of an autonomous council. Organized under the banner of the Tai Ahom Unity Platform, the rally drew fervent participation from diverse groups, channeling collective frustration into a resounding demand for cultural preservation and political empowerment.

The demonstration kicked off with a symbolic ritual at the statue of Chaolung Sukapha near Eco Park, where earthen lamps were lit to honor ancestral legacies and ignite the spirit of resilience. From there, the procession snaked its way from the Margherita Town High School playground along NH-315, culminating at the North Margherita Rangmanch in a crescendo of chants and solidarity. Over 10,000 voices echoed through the night, brandishing torches that symbolized enlightenment and unquenchable resolve against perceived injustices.

This groundswell of activism united a spectrum of Tai Ahom organizations, including the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), Ahom Sabha, Tai Ahom Mahila Parishad, Poi Furalung, and Purvanchal Tai Sahitya Sabha. Leaders lambasted the Union and Assam state administrations for what they described as a trail of unfulfilled assurances since the BJP assumed power, accusing them of sidelining the community’s rightful claims to tribal safeguards and self-determination.

“At the core of our struggle lies the quest for ST status—a shield for our heritage and future generations—and an autonomous council to steer our destiny with dignity,” proclaimed rally conveners, underscoring how these milestones would fortify identity, land rights, and economic autonomy in the face of modernization’s pressures. The throng’s slogans pierced the air, weaving pleas for justice with vows of escalated action if ignored.

The gathering’s urgency stems from a decade of perceived neglect, where repeated pledges evaporated into policy voids, leaving the Tai Ahom people—renowned for their storied contributions to Assam’s fabric—grappling with marginalization. Organizers issued a stark ultimatum: without swift concessions ahead of the next assembly polls, the community stands poised to ramp up mobilizations, potentially shunning the electoral process altogether in a boycott that could reshape regional dynamics.

This torchlit surge not only revitalizes the Tai Ahom movement but also spotlights the Northeast’s broader indigenous renaissance, where unified fronts challenge systemic oversights. As Margherita’s flames dimmed, the embers of determination lingered, heralding a pivotal chapter in the fight for equitable representation and self-rule.
