Arunachal Candlelight Vigil Ignites Call for Justice in Sainik School Ragging Tragedy

Seppa Community and Apatani Youth Rally Against Alleged Senior Bullying at Niglok, Urging Swift Probe and School Overhaul for Victim Tadu Haro

A solemn procession illuminated the streets of Seppa as members of the Women Welfare Organization, joined by local community groups, women’s networks, and eager students from various schools, converged in a heartfelt candlelight march to honor the memory of 12-year-old Tadu Haro, a Class 7 student whose life ended tragically at Sainik School Niglok. The gathering, a poignant blend of grief and resolve, traversed from Circuit House to General Ground in East Kameng district, with participants clutching flickering lights to symbolize their unyielding quest for truth and reform.

This unified display of solidarity emerges against a backdrop of escalating outcry over fresh claims of relentless torment inflicted on the young learner by older peers, just prior to his discovery in distressing circumstances. The march, spanning the late afternoon hours, amplified voices demanding an unflinching examination of the events that unfolded in the dormitories, where absence of oversight allegedly allowed shadows of cruelty to take hold.

Tadu Lunia, the victim’s elder sister and Miss Arunachal 2024 titleholder, has emerged as a fierce advocate, sharing a compelling online video that peels back layers of the initial suicide narrative provided by campus authorities. Drawing from accounts relayed by the boy’s fellow juniors, Lunia described a harrowing late-night intrusion by roughly eight Class 10 cadets and three from Class 8, who breached the younger boys’ quarters unchecked. The intruders purportedly shrouded the juniors’ heads in bedding before isolating her brother and escorting him to the seniors’ space.

“Behind those sealed doors, the full extent of the ordeal stays veiled, but peers recount a grueling barrage of emotional and physical strain that stretched through the darkness,” Lunia shared, her words laced with profound heartbreak. She highlighted accusations that labeled the boy a “thief” over a lost textbook, coupled with veiled threats of shaming him before the entire student body—a psychological onslaught that shattered his resolve.

Surveillance recordings, pored over by investigators, reportedly depict the child’s restless wanderings in the early morning light, culminating in a secluded classroom where he etched a final, desperate message: “The seniors subjected me to endless agony, and I’m lost on what comes next.” Lunia’s narrative also touches on the unintended burden her public success may have imposed, turning spotlight moments into unintended vulnerabilities for her sibling in his most vulnerable phase.

Bolstering the momentum, the Apatani Youth Association has lodged a compelling petition with top state officials, including the Chief Minister, Governor, Chief Secretary, and East Siang Deputy Commissioner, pressing for decisive governmental action. The group advocates for an expedited, exhaustive inquiry into the boy’s passing, alongside immediate disciplinary measures against implicated students, ranging from suspension to expulsion per institutional codes.

Further calls target the swift removal of on-duty educators and staff for interim scrutiny, coupled with a provisional halt to school activities until clarity prevails. The association insists that any lapses uncovered warrant stringent legal repercussions, framing this as a non-negotiable stand against institutional failures that imperil young lives.

As the flames of the vigil fade, the collective plea reverberates: transform this sorrow into safeguards, ensuring no other child navigates the corridors of learning under the weight of unchecked malice. This grassroots surge not only seeks retribution for one lost soul but ignites a broader crusade for fortified anti-bullying protocols and vigilant oversight in Arunachal’s educational bastions.
