Arunachal Court Releases IAS Officer Talo Potom on Bail in Alleged Suicide Abetment Probe

yupia Sessions Judge Cites Lack of Strong Evidence for Detention, Sets Conditions Including Rs 1 Lakh Surety Amid Ongoing Investigation into Tragic Claims

In a significant judicial development, the District and Sessions Court in Yupia has approved bail for senior IAS officer Talo Potom, the ex-Deputy Commissioner of the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR), in a sensitive case involving accusations of abetting a suicide. The decision underscores the court’s assessment that preliminary evidence does not warrant prolonged incarceration, balancing legal scrutiny with the right to liberty.

Potom, who turned himself in to authorities, had been held in judicial custody following an initial 14-day remand order that placed him at Jullang District Central Jail. The bail comes with a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh, reflecting a measured approach to ensure compliance while the probe continues.

The controversy traces back to the heartbreaking death of Yekar, who reportedly penned a note blaming Potom and another official, Executive Engineer Lowang, for severe emotional distress and exploitative conduct. These grave allegations painted a picture of prolonged torment that allegedly pushed the individual to an irreversible act, sending shockwaves through administrative and community circles.

Nirjuli Police Station swiftly registered the matter as Case No. 92/2025, invoking Sections 108, 271, 272, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Potom emerged as the primary suspect, prompting a thorough digital trail that revealed his mobile device in the hands of a household aide after he reportedly exchanged his SIM card prior to departing his residence.

Adding to the narrative, unverified rumors suggesting Potom’s HIV status have been firmly debunked through a reliable medical evaluation at DJ Drugs & Diagnostic Laboratory in Bage Tinali, Nirjuli. The results unequivocally cleared the officer, quashing misinformation that had compounded the case’s intensity.

As the investigation unfolds under vigilant oversight, this bail ruling highlights the judiciary’s role in safeguarding due process amid high-stakes allegations. Stakeholders await further revelations, with the episode serving as a stark reminder of the profound impacts of workplace dynamics and the imperative for robust mental health support in public service environments.
