TAYPA-Led Mobilization Echoes Battle Cries for Indigenous Safeguards, Slams BJP Inaction Amid Warnings of Electoral Backlash in Upcoming Polls
The streets of Moran, a bustling hub straddling Dibrugarh and Charaideo districts, lit up in a blaze of defiance as the Central Committee of the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA), spearheaded a colossal torch-lit procession. Teaming up with the Tai Ahom Mahila Parishad and throngs of local supporters, the event transformed the town into a symphony of resolve, kicking off from Ushapur Playground and weaving through major thoroughfares before circling back to its origin point.
Waving flaming torches high, participants unleashed a torrent of rallying cries that reverberated through the night: “Jaagega Ahom, Jaagega Hi” (The Ahom Will Rise, It Surely Will), “No ST, No Rest,” “No ST, No Vote,” “We May Die but We Will Secure Tribal Status,” and a pointed “Down with BJP.” These potent chants encapsulated decades of simmering frustration, channeling the community’s unyielding quest for justice into a visual and vocal spectacle that drew widespread attention.
At the forefront stood the Diganta Tamuli faction of TAYPA, marshaled by influential figures including Green Bargohain, Ranjan Boruah, Abhijit Bargohain, Nipam Dihingia, and Rekha Gogoi. Their presence amplified the rally’s gravity, blending youthful vigor with seasoned advocacy to forge a united front against perceived governmental neglect.
The core grievances? An urgent call for constitutional elevation to Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, coupled with the creation of autonomous administrative bodies to shield the Tai Ahom’s rich cultural tapestry and political voice from erosion. Rally organizers framed these demands as non-negotiable lifelines, essential for preserving ancestral lands, traditions, and equitable opportunities in a rapidly changing Assam.
Drawing sharp barbs at the ruling BJP-led dispensation, representatives from TAYPA’s Moran Mahkuma and Anchalik Committees lambasted the administration for stonewalling long-cherished goals. “Promises have withered on the vine, leaving our people adrift—enough is enough,” one leader thundered, underscoring a pattern of broken pledges that has fueled this resurgence of activism.
As the flames flickered out, a stark ultimatum lingered in the air: heed the clarion call for ST inclusion and self-governance, or brace for seismic shifts in voter allegiance come the next assembly showdowns. This nocturnal uprising not only rekindles the Tai Ahom flame of self-determination but also spotlights the broader Northeast imperative for inclusive policies that honor indigenous legacies amid modernization’s march.
