Arunachal Pradesh Highlights Organic Agriculture at Global Conclave

Tawang: Arunachal Pradesh took center stage at an International Conclave cum Buyer-Seller Meet, showcasing its organic farming potential and aiming to capture global markets. Organized by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with the state government, the event at Kalawangpo Convention Hall facilitated direct engagement between international buyers and local farmers.

The conclave saw participation from 11 buyers representing countries like the UAE, Nepal, and Bhutan, alongside 17 Indian exporters from states including Assam, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Over 50 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and more than 350 farmers from Arunachal Pradesh presented their high-quality organic produce, such as kiwi, mandarin oranges, and GI-tagged Khamti rice, to explore export opportunities.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu emphasized the state’s commitment to boosting its agricultural sector, highlighting the export potential of unique products like yak cheese and mandarin oranges to Southeast Asian and ASEAN markets. He addressed challenges like limited cold storage, proposing to leverage Arunachal’s hydropower potential to support agri-export infrastructure.

Agriculture Minister Gabriel Denwang Wangsu stressed the importance of building farmer capacity and market awareness to secure better prices for premium produce like apples and value-added products. APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev advocated for greater FPO participation in trade fairs to enhance market outreach.

Experts from the Centre for Agri Infrastructure Research and Action (CAIRA) recommended improving transportation routes for non-perishable goods and establishing primary processing facilities within the state to reduce post-harvest losses, estimated at 10% for fruits like kiwi. These steps aim to strengthen Arunachal’s position in the global organic market.

The event underscored Arunachal Pradesh’s ambition to transform its agricultural landscape, fostering sustainable growth and international trade partnerships.
