Guwahati: The Assam government has announced an ambitious plan to honor Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary musician and cultural icon, by constructing a memorial and publishing a biographical book. The decision, made during a recent Assam Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aims to celebrate Hazarika’s enduring legacy ahead of his birth centenary.
The memorial, to be built at the Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra in Jalukbari, Guwahati, will serve as a cultural hub, preserving the maestro’s contributions to music, film, and literature. The biographical book will chronicle Hazarika’s life, highlighting his role in promoting Assam’s culture globally through his soulful compositions and universal themes of harmony.
Additionally, a year-long centenary celebration, starting September 8, 2025, will feature events across India to showcase Hazarika’s work. Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the initiative’s goal to inspire future generations, noting Hazarika’s unparalleled impact as the “Bard of Brahmaputra.” The announcement has sparked widespread support, with citizens and cultural organizations lauding the government’s commitment to preserving Assam’s heritage.
