KENZAMANI, Arunachal Pradesh — A historic trekking expedition retracing the Dalai Lama’s 1959 escape from Tibet has begun in the remote village of Kenzamani, located in Arunachal Pradesh’s Zemithang circle. Dubbed the Freedom Trail Trek, the event pays homage to the spiritual leader’s perilous journey to safety, fleeing Chinese oppression 66 years ago.
Organized by the state tourism department in partnership with local communities, the trek takes participants through rugged terrain, dense forests, and high-altitude landscapes. The route mirrors the challenging path the Dalai Lama navigated, offering a vivid glimpse into the resilience that marked his escape. Local guides, many descended from those who assisted the Dalai Lama decades ago, lead the groups, enriching the experience with oral histories handed down through generations.
The initiative serves a dual purpose: commemorating a defining moment in history and promoting eco-tourism in Arunachal Pradesh. State officials highlight that the trek showcases the region’s breathtaking natural beauty and deep cultural roots, aiming to forge a stronger bond between visitors and the land’s legacy.
Participants have praised the trail’s pristine scenery and spiritual resonance, with some calling it a transformative journey. Organizers hope to establish the Freedom Trail Trek as an annual event, spotlighting both the Dalai Lama’s legacy and Arunachal Pradesh’s unique place in it.
