SHERGAON, Arunachal Pradesh — Chief Minister Pema Khandu took the lead in a significant environmental initiative by releasing 7,000 fingerlings of the indigenous Schizothorax fish species into the Choskhorong-Kho river in Shergaon, West Kameng district. The river ranching program, organized by the Department of Fisheries and supported by the National Fisheries Development Board in Hyderabad, underscores a commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable fishing practices.
Khandu was joined by Home Minister Mama Natung, State BJP President Kaling Moyong, and several MLAs, including Phurpa Tsering, Tenzin Nyima Glow, and Tsetan Chombay, in this hands-on effort to bolster the region’s aquatic ecosystem. Fisheries Secretary Hage Tari also participated, emphasizing the initiative’s broader impact, with plans to extend similar programs to 11 districts across Arunachal Pradesh.
The release of the Schizothorax fingerlings aims to enhance fish stocks in natural water bodies, supporting in-situ conservation while discouraging illegal fishing methods. Local leaders hailed the event as a vital step toward ecological balance and economic sustainability for communities dependent on the river. The program reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to harmonize development with environmental stewardship.
