Arunachal Pradesh Unveils Ambitious Carbon Neutrality Roadmap for Long-Term Environmental Sustainability

Itanagar – Arunachal Pradesh has taken a bold step toward a greener future with the launch of a comprehensive carbon neutrality roadmap, aimed at achieving long-term environmental goals. The initiative, spearheaded by the Hydro Power Development Corporation of Arunachal Pradesh Limited (HPDCAPL), was highlighted during a recent sensitization program held in the state capital, though the exact date of the event was not specified in official releases.

The program focused on raising awareness about sustainable practices and exploring the state’s potential in the carbon market. Samuel Changkija, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, emphasized the necessity of a structured plan and a robust carbon credit trading system to meet these ambitious objectives. He underscored Arunachal Pradesh’s unique position to lead in environmental conservation, given its vast natural resources and biodiversity.

Kishan Prajapati, Associate Director of Creduce Technologies and a key speaker at the event, provided insights into the mechanics of carbon credits, detailing both voluntary and compliance markets, as well as India’s regulatory framework. He spotlighted the state’s untapped potential to generate green jobs and revenue through carbon market participation, positioning it as a model for sustainable development.

Toko Onuj, Chairman and Managing Director of HPDCAPL, reiterated India’s national commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. He stressed the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and outlined HPDCAPL’s pivotal role as a carbon development unit in driving sustainable growth across Arunachal Pradesh. Meanwhile, Varaprasad K, Assistant General Manager of NABARD, highlighted the importance of climate resilience and the collaborative efforts of financial institutions, including NABARD’s Climate Change Fund, in supporting the state’s carbon neutrality ambitions.

This roadmap aligns with broader efforts to position Arunachal Pradesh as a leader in environmental stewardship, leveraging its natural assets to contribute to both regional and national sustainability targets. Further details on implementation timelines and specific projects are anticipated as the state moves forward with this forward-thinking initiative.
