Arunachal Pradesh has taken a significant step toward promoting eco-tourism with the inauguration of the ‘Ponrung’ Bat Cave near Lokpeng Village in Siang District. The ancient cave, known for its striking stalactite formations, was officially opened to tourists on Friday by Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Ojing Tasing, marking a milestone in the state’s efforts to showcase its natural wonders.
The event saw the presence of Siang Deputy Commissioner P.N. Thungon, district officials, and local community members, who celebrated the cave’s transformation into an accessible destination. Concrete steps leading to the cave have been constructed, thanks to a joint effort by Tasing and Thungon, making it easier for visitors to explore this geological marvel.
In a major push for development, Minister Tasing announced an allocation of Rs 20 lakh to further enhance the site. The funds will support infrastructure upgrades, including improved lighting and visitor amenities, aimed at establishing ‘Ponrung’ as a premier eco-tourism spot. “This cave is a treasure of our natural heritage,” Tasing said during the inauguration. “With these enhancements, we hope to attract tourists while creating sustainable opportunities for the local community.”
The initiative has been driven by the Lokpeng Welfare Society (LWS), led by President Talo Pajing, which first explored the cave in September 2024. Their efforts, backed by community support, have been instrumental in preserving and promoting the site. Tasing also emphasized the need for environmental stewardship, urging residents to protect the region’s biodiversity and move away from hunting practices.
With its unique geological features and rich ecological significance, the ‘Ponrung’ Bat Cave is poised to become a must-visit destination, blending adventure with conservation in Arunachal Pradesh’s scenic Siang District.
