Assam: NIT Silchar Professor Suspended Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations, Sparking Protests

A professor at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, has been suspended following serious allegations of sexual harassment made by a female student. The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with students staging protests across the campus to demand justice and accountability.

The accused, an assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering Department, was suspended late Thursday night after the student reported that he had behaved inappropriately toward her. According to sources, the alleged harassment took place when the professor summoned the student to his office under the pretext of discussing her academic performance. The student’s complaint detailed unwanted physical contact, prompting swift action from the institute’s administration.

Outraged by the allegations, hundreds of NIT Silchar students gathered in protest, calling for the professor’s immediate removal and a thorough investigation. The demonstrations, which began late Thursday and continued into the early hours of Friday, saw students voicing their frustration over what they claim is a recurring issue at the institute. Some protesters alleged that the professor had faced similar accusations in the past, raising concerns about institutional oversight.

The NIT administration responded by suspending the accused with immediate effect, pending a formal inquiry. The institute’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), tasked with addressing sexual harassment cases, has launched an investigation to ascertain the facts. Authorities have assured that the process will be transparent and in line with legal protocols.

Local police have also been informed, though no formal complaint has been lodged with them as of Friday morning. Assam Police, reacting to posts circulating on social media, directed Cachar district officials to monitor the situation closely.

The incident has reignited discussions about campus safety and the need for stricter measures to protect students, particularly women, in educational institutions. As the investigation unfolds, the NIT Silchar community remains on edge, awaiting further developments in this troubling case.
