Central Government Commits Rs 3 Lakh Crore to Transform Assam’s Highways to US Standards

Guwahati, Assam – In a landmark announcement, the Central Government has pledged an investment of Rs 3 lakh crore to revamp Assam’s national highways, aiming to elevate them to standards comparable to those in the United States. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, unveiled the ambitious plan during a session in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, underscoring the government’s focus on boosting infrastructure in the Northeast.

Speaking during the Question Hour, Gadkari emphasized that the ministry faces no shortage of funds for road development projects. He outlined key initiatives, including the completion of the Guwahati Ring Road by December 2027, a project carrying a price tag of Rs 5,800 crore. Another major undertaking is a Rs 12,000 crore tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River in Dibrugarh, which is currently awaiting final approval. These projects are part of a broader vision to overhaul Assam’s highway network, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth.

The minister expressed confidence that this massive investment will position Assam’s highways on par with American infrastructure, promising smoother travel and improved transport efficiency. “We are determined to transform the national highway system in Assam, making it a model of development,” Gadkari stated, adding that the initiative aligns with the government’s priority to uplift the Northeast under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

The announcement has sparked optimism among Assam’s residents and leaders, who see it as a catalyst for job creation and regional progress. As the state prepares for this infrastructure leap, the focus remains on timely execution and ensuring that the benefits reach every corner of Assam. Further details on project timelines and specific highway upgrades are expected in the coming months as the ministry finalizes its plans.
