The Arunachal Pradesh government is considering scrapping a contract for a stalled section of the National Highway 415 (NH-415) project due to prolonged delays, Chief Minister Pema Khandu indicated on Monday. The announcement came during a legislative session in the state capital, spotlighting growing frustration over the slow pace of this critical infrastructure initiative.
The project in question involves an 11-kilometer stretch of NH-415, a vital artery connecting the capital region. Despite its importance for improving transportation and economic activity in the state, the segment has faced repeated setbacks, prompting the chief minister to hint at drastic action. Speaking in response to concerns raised by a fellow legislator about the deteriorating condition of roads in Itanagar, Khandu stressed that the government is unwilling to let the project languish further.
“We cannot keep waiting indefinitely while the people suffer,” Khandu remarked, pointing to the sluggish progress by the contracted firm. He underscored that the highway’s development is essential for the state’s connectivity and growth, and delays are tarnishing the government’s broader achievements in infrastructure.
NH-415 has been under development in phases, with some sections already showing significant improvement. However, the specific portion in question has lagged, drawing ire from both officials and residents. The chief minister did not name the firm involved but made it clear that the state is evaluating its options, including potentially terminating the agreement if performance does not improve swiftly.
The highway’s completion is seen as a priority for Arunachal Pradesh, which relies heavily on robust road networks to link its remote and mountainous regions.
