Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh – In a decisive move to curb illicit activities, the Arunachal Pradesh government has vowed to enforce stringent measures against illegal gambling and unauthorized lotteries, as announced on March 6, 2025. The commitment was made clear during a recent session of the state assembly, where Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein addressed growing concerns over these pervasive issues.
The pledge came in response to a Private Member Resolution introduced by Kumar Waii, the lone Congress MLA in the assembly. Waii called for immediate action to halt the unchecked sale of unauthorized lottery tickets and “housie” games, alongside the illegal collection of donations, which he described as rampant, particularly in the state capital, Itanagar. Highlighting the social and economic toll of these activities, he urged the government to prioritize enforcement.
Deputy Chief Minister Mein acknowledged the persistence of illegal gambling and unauthorized lottery sales despite existing laws. Labeling the resolution “relevant,” he assured the assembly that the government is taking the matter seriously. To strengthen enforcement, instructions have already been issued to deputy commissioners across the state to rigorously implement existing regulations. Mein emphasized that the administration would work collaboratively with assembly members to devise effective solutions.
The government’s stance reflects a broader intent to restore order and protect citizens from the adverse effects of such unlawful practices. While specific details of the crackdown remain under discussion, the assurance signals a proactive approach to tackling a long-standing issue in Arunachal Pradesh. Following the deputy chief minister’s response, Waii withdrew his resolution, expressing confidence in the government’s commitment.
This development marks a significant step toward addressing public grievances and reinforcing legal frameworks in the state, with authorities now tasked to translate promises into action. As the crackdown unfolds, residents and observers alike await tangible outcomes in the fight against illegal gambling and lottery operations.
