Imphal, March 1, 2025 – Security forces in Manipur have been placed on high alert after a firing incident disrupted prayer rituals at the Kongba Maru Temple in the Wakan area of Imphal East district earlier today. The attack, which occurred in the morning, has raised tensions in the region, prompting swift action from local authorities.
According to officials, unidentified gunmen opened fire during a prayer ceremony at the temple, a sacred site for the Meitei community. The devotees, accompanied by a combined team of Manipur Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, were in the process of conducting rituals when the shots were fired from nearby hills, suspected to be from the Wakan Hill Range in Kangpokpi district. No injuries were reported, but the incident has sparked widespread concern.
A senior police official stated that security forces responded immediately, launching combing operations and area domination exercises to secure the vicinity and prevent further escalation. “The situation is under control, but we remain vigilant to ensure the safety of the public,” the official said. Additional reinforcements have been deployed to the area as a precautionary measure.
The firing comes at a sensitive time, just days after efforts to recover looted and illegal arms in the state gained momentum, following an appeal by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. Local residents expressed frustration over the incident, with some taking to the streets to protest, blocking roads and demanding stronger action against those responsible.
The Kongba Maru Temple, located approximately 22 kilometers from Imphal, holds cultural and religious significance as the starting point of the Kongba River. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack, with early reports suggesting it may be linked to ongoing tensions in the region.
