Guwahati, Assam – Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spotlighted Assam’s remarkable economic progress, attributing the state’s success to the governance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit in Guwahati, Modi announced that Assam’s economy has soared to new heights under the BJP, reflecting the power of coordinated efforts between the state and central governments.
During his address, Modi emphasized the transformative impact of what he termed the “double-engine government.” He noted that since the launch of the first Advantage Assam Summit in 2018, when the state’s economy was valued at approximately Rs 2.75 lakh crore, it has now doubled to an impressive Rs 6 lakh crore. This leap underscores a period of rapid development and investment in Assam, a state historically rich in potential but often overlooked.
The Prime Minister framed the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit as a vital platform to connect Assam’s opportunities with the global stage. “Eastern India and the Northeast are stepping into a new era of prosperity,” he said, crediting the region’s historical role in India’s growth and its renewed momentum today. The summit, attended by Union Ministers like S. Jaishankar, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Sarbananda Sonowal, along with industry giants such as Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, aims to attract fresh investments and bolster infrastructure.
Modi also pointed to significant strides in connectivity and infrastructure as key drivers of this growth. He highlighted that Assam’s railway budget has surged from an average of Rs 2,100 crore between 2009 and 2014 to Rs 10,000 crore under the current administration—a fourfold increase. Additionally, he noted the construction of four new bridges over the Brahmaputra River in the last decade, compared to just three prior to 2014, boosting accessibility and economic activity.
On the global front, Modi tied Assam’s progress to India’s broader economic strategy, mentioning strengthened trade ties with East Asia and the emerging India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. These initiatives, he argued, position Assam as a gateway for regional and international commerce.
The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has set an ambitious goal of reaching a Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of $143 billion by 2030. Modi expressed confidence in this target, citing the state’s dynamic workforce and strategic initiatives like the North-East Industrialization Transformation Plan, ‘Unnati.’ He also celebrated Assam’s tea industry, a 200-year-old legacy that continues to fuel economic ambition across sectors.
As Assam cements its place in India’s growth story, the buzz is palpable online, with hashtags like #AdvantageAssam2, #AssamRising, and #DoubleEngineGrowth gaining traction. This summit marks not just a milestone but a launchpad for Assam’s future on the national and global stage.
