Guwahati, February 22, 2025: Assam is gearing up for an unprecedented cultural showcase as over 8,000 young performers from the state’s tea garden communities prepare to present a spectacular Jhumur dance performance. Scheduled for Monday, February 24, at Sarusajai Indoor Stadium in Guwahati, the event will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ambassadors from 60 countries, marking a historic moment for the state.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the details on Saturday, highlighting the significance of this gathering. He noted that it will be the first time such a large contingent of international diplomats will converge in Assam to witness a cultural event of this scale. The ‘Jhumoir Binandini’ programme, starting at 5:30 PM, aims to spotlight the rich traditions of Assam’s tea industry, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2024.
The Chief Minister revealed that approximately 8,500 participants, including dancers and master trainers, will be part of the performance. To encourage and support the artists, Sarma announced financial incentives: Rs 25,000 for each participant and master trainer, Rs 30,000 for expert trainers, and an additional Rs 25,000 for every tea garden to establish cultural clubs. These clubs are intended to foster ongoing cultural activities within the tea communities.
PM Modi, joined by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, will witness this vibrant display, which Sarma described as an effort to present Assam’s musical and dance heritage to the world. While no official attempt will be made to set a world record, the Chief Minister remarked that the presence of 60 ambassadors watching the event together would itself be a unique achievement for Assam. Arrangements are also being made to live-stream the performance to tea garden areas across the state, ensuring wider participation and viewership.
The Jhumur dance, deeply rooted in the lives of Assam’s tea tribes, reflects their joy, unity, and cultural identity. This grand event not only celebrates their legacy but also positions Assam as a cultural and economic hub, coinciding with the upcoming Advantage Assam Investment Summit on February 25-26. With meticulous preparations underway, Guwahati is poised to deliver a memorable evening that bridges tradition and global recognition.
