Introduction

A group of fourteen journalists from India’s Northeast region has commenced a three-day media tour to cover the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. This initiative, organized by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh government, runs from January 21 to 23, 2025.

Delegation Composition

The delegation comprises media representatives from seven northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. Notable participants include staff reporter Sagolsem Bigyan from The People’s Chronicle and reporter Saratchandra Sharma from The Sangai Express, both representing Manipur. Other participating media outlets encompass Arunachal Front, Asomiya Pratidin, Dainik Asom, DY365, Time8, U Peitngor, The Morung Express, Hornbill TV, Summit Times, Swatantra Aawaj, Headlines Tripura, and Satyabhashan.

Maha Kumbh 2025 Overview

Scheduled from January 13 to February 26, 2025, the Maha Kumbh is a significant spiritual gathering rooted in Hindu mythology. It traces its origins to the Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean, during which drops of nectar are believed to have fallen at Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The sacred bath taken during this event symbolizes soul purification and spiritual enlightenment.

Anticipated Attendance

This year’s Maha Kumbh is expected to attract over 45 crore (450 million) devotees, including approximately 15 lakh (1.5 million) international visitors. This marks a significant increase from the 25 crore (250 million) attendees recorded during the 2019 Kumbh Mela.

Purpose of the Media Tour

The PIB’s media tours aim to showcase how the Maha Kumbh promotes unity across caste, religion, and culture. Beyond its spiritual significance, the festival serves as a global platform to highlight India’s rich cultural heritage, vibrant traditions, and economic prosperity.

Conclusion

This media tour offers northeastern journalists a unique opportunity to capture and share the cultural and spiritual essence of the Maha Kumbh Mela with audiences across the Northeast region and beyond, fostering greater cultural exchange and understanding.
