Arunachal Pradesh Hosts Annual Pineapple Festival in Bagra

Highlighting Agricultural Progress and Community Initiatives

Introduction

The village of Bagra in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Siang district recently hosted the Arunachal Pineapple Festival, marking a significant step in promoting local agriculture and community-driven initiatives.

Festival Inception and Objectives

Organized by the All Bagra Welfare Society (ABWS) in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture Marketing Board, the festival aims to:

  • Revitalize pineapple cultivation in the region.
  • Explore broader market opportunities for local produce.
  • Equip farmers with skills in processing and value addition for crops like pineapple, orange, and banana.

Government Support and Future Plans

Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced that the festival will become an annual event, organized by the state’s Department of Horticulture. He commended the ABWS for initiating the festival without government funding and highlighted West Siang’s potential in horticulture. Khandu also assured the establishment of a mini food park in the district to process produce from the entire Siang belt.

Historical Context of Pineapple Cultivation

Bagra village has been a hub for pineapple cultivation since the 1950s, under the guidance of the late Tojo Bagra. In 1980, a pineapple growers association was formed to explore better marketing avenues and push for the establishment of a large-scale processing unit. Although a canning factory was eventually set up, it couldn’t sustain, leading to a decline in farmer morale. The Pineapple Festival aims to rejuvenate this sector by promoting the cultivation of pineapple, orange, lemon, and banana across 2,000 to 5,000 hectares in the area.

Community and Leadership Participation

The festival saw participation from various dignitaries, including Speaker Pasang D Sona, local legislator and Cabinet Minister Tumke Bagra, and several MLAs. Chief Minister Khandu also awarded certificates to winners of the Mountain Biking (MTB) Challenge organized during the event.

Conclusion

The Arunachal Pineapple Festival in Bagra stands as a testament to the region’s commitment to agricultural development and community-led initiatives. By making it an annual event, the state aims to boost local economies, empower farmers, and showcase Arunachal Pradesh’s rich horticultural potential.
