Introduction

The D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, established in 1978 and spanning approximately 190 square kilometers, is a vital habitat for diverse flora and fauna, including tigers and leopards. However, recent encroachments and illegal activities have raised significant concerns among conservationists and authorities.

Government’s Response to Encroachment

In response to the rising encroachments, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has mandated immediate actions to remove unauthorized occupants from the sanctuary. This directive emphasizes collaboration with local authorities and continuous monitoring to safeguard the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity.

Concerns Over Illegal Fishing Activities

Wildlife conservators have highlighted issues related to unauthorized fishing around the sanctuary. Reports indicate that certain village authorities have been issuing fishing permissions without proper oversight, leading to potential disruptions in the sanctuary’s ecosystem. Experts stress the need for stringent regulations to prevent such activities.

Poaching Incidents and Legal Actions

The sanctuary has also witnessed poaching incidents, notably the recent arrest of individuals involved in the killing of a Sambar deer. The poachers had disguised their boat as a fishing vessel to gain entry into the sanctuary and used firearms to hunt the deer. Authorities have invoked sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and the Arms Act, 1959, to prosecute the offenders, underscoring a zero-tolerance policy towards such illegal activities.

Community Engagement and Conservation Efforts

Recognizing the importance of community involvement in conservation, local NGOs and sanctuary officials have been conducting awareness programs. Initiatives like the proposed reintroduction of rhinoceroses aim to restore the sanctuary’s ecological balance and promote eco-tourism, benefiting local communities economically.

Conclusion

The D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary faces challenges from encroachment and illegal activities. However, with decisive government action and active community participation, there is optimism for preserving this ecological treasure for future generations.
