Commencing at the Tawang Monastery, the procession concluded at Masang Dungyur Mani in the Old Market area. The march saw involvement from various sections of society, including monks from multiple monasteries, public officials, members of the Monpa Mimang Tsogpa (MMT), and organizations such as the All Monpa Students’ Union (AMSU) and the All Tawang District Students’ Union (ATDSU). Additionally, representatives from the Taxi Association, Women’s Welfare Association (WWA), social organizations, and local market committees participated, reflecting a unified community response.
Background of the Earthquake
The earthquake that struck Tibet on January 7 resulted in at least 126 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The tremors were felt across neighboring regions, including Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of northern India. The disaster also led to the destruction of over 1,000 homes, leaving many without shelter.
Expressions of Solidarity Beyond Tawang
Similar expressions of solidarity have been observed elsewhere. In Dharamshala, hundreds of Tibetans-in-exile organized a candlelight vigil to honor the earthquake victims.
