Arunachal Pradesh CM Addresses Misconceptions About Siang Multipurpose Project

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed concerns over misinformation being spread by external activists regarding the 12,500 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. He emphasized that the project is not solely about constructing a dam but serves multiple purposes, including maintaining the river’s natural flow and mitigating potential flood risks from upstream activities.

Allegations of Misinformation

Khandu highlighted that activists from outside the state are residing in local villages and misleading residents about the project’s intentions. He assured that he would address these concerns by providing detailed information and perspectives from both state and central governments.

Local Protests and Concerns

Residents of Komkar village in Upper Siang district have protested against the project, citing socio-environmental issues such as displacement, loss of ancestral lands, and threats to biodiversity. They have demanded the withdrawal of security forces and suspension of the project.

Government’s Stance

The Chief Minister reiterated the project’s significance in preserving the Siang River and protecting communities that depend on it. He warned of severe consequences if upstream projects proceed without safeguards, potentially affecting the river’s flow during winters.

Conclusion

The Siang Upper Multipurpose Project is a significant initiative aimed at generating power, maintaining river flow, and preventing floods. The state government is committed to addressing public concerns and ensuring transparent communication about the project’s objectives and benefits.
