India has successfully constructed a 9.214-kilometer fence along the India-Myanmar border near Moreh in Manipur, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Annual Report 2023-2024. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) executed the fencing project, and work is currently underway to build a parallel road to enhance security and facilitate better patrolling in the area.
Strategic Importance of Moreh
Moreh serves as a crucial border town and a significant trade hub between India and Myanmar. The completion of the fencing project is part of India’s broader strategy to secure its borders and promote infrastructural development in the northeastern region.
India-Myanmar Border Overview
The India-Myanmar border extends over 1,643 kilometers, passing through the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Nagaland (215 km), Manipur (398 km), and Mizoram (510 km). Of this, 1,472 kilometers have been demarcated. The porous nature of the border has historically facilitated smuggling, illegal migration, and insurgent activities, necessitating enhanced security measures.
Ongoing and Future Projects
In addition to the Moreh fencing, the MHA report highlights other initiatives:
Hybrid Surveillance Systems: Construction of two pilot projects featuring hybrid surveillance systems, each covering one kilometer in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, has been awarded to Assam Rifles, with work currently in progress.
Additional Fencing and Roads: A project involving the construction of 20.862 kilometers of fence and road was awarded to the BRO in February 2024, and work is ongoing.
These efforts underscore India’s commitment to bolstering border security and improving infrastructure in the northeastern states.
