Meghalaya Shivling Dispute: Dialogue Scheduled to Resolve Contention

A contentious dispute surrounding the Mawjambuin Cave Shivling in Mawsynram has been temporarily alleviated following the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner’s official invitation for key stakeholders to participate in a crucial meeting scheduled for January 3, 2025.

In response to this initiative, the Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP), a prominent organization involved in the dispute, has agreed to suspend all protest activities until the conclusion of these discussions.

“Our intentions are not to create any unwarranted circumstances or to cause harm to individuals of any religion, caste, or community,” stated KSP President Satya Ranjan Borah. “Our actions have been guided by the principles enshrined in Article 51(A) of the Indian Constitution.”

The KSP has formally requested the inclusion of local representatives, including those from the Darbar and Seng Khashi Hima Mawsynram, in these crucial discussions. Furthermore, they have sought permission to conduct a site visit to gain a deeper understanding of the cave’s context.

Borah emphasized the organization’s unwavering commitment to “strengthening national integrity and socio-cultural harmony” while acknowledging the state government’s proactive efforts to address this sensitive issue. The future course of action will be determined by the outcomes and resolutions reached during the scheduled meeting.
