Unique Museum Showcases Surrendered Air Guns in Arunachal Pradesh’s Kra Daadi District

Villagers of Kra Daadi district in Arunachal Pradesh demonstrated a remarkable commitment to conservation by surrendering 116 air guns. These weapons are now prominently displayed in a unique museum inaugurated in Palin, the district headquarters, on December 21st.

This initiative was spearheaded by the Nyishi Elite Society (NES), the esteemed apex body of the Nyishi community.

Arunachal Pradesh, renowned for its exceptional flora and fauna, has witnessed a concerning rise in hunting activities over the years, resulting in a significant decline in the populations of various bird and animal species, including numerous endangered ones.

Taking serious note of this critical issue, the NES, in collaboration with the district administration, devised a unique conservation plan. This plan involved appealing to villagers to voluntarily surrender their air guns, which had been used for hunting purposes.

Thanks to this innovative initiative and a comprehensive awareness campaign advocating for a complete ban on hunting, villagers responded positively. They began surrendering their air guns, and to date, an impressive 116 air guns have been collected and showcased in the museum.

The museum was officially inaugurated by Heri Maring, the esteemed General Secretary of NES, in the presence of Arunachal Pradesh Urban Minister Balo Raja, MLA Jikke Tako, and Deputy Commissioner Charu Nili.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu took to his microblogging platform, X, to commend this inspiring initiative. “An inspiring example of wildlife conservation!” he stated.

“The unique Air Gun Museum at Palin delivers a powerful message: Preservation triumphs over hunting. Kudos to the Nyishi Elite Society, the apex body of Nyishi society, and the local communities for their dedicated efforts to protect our rich biodiversity for future generations,” CM Khandu tweeted.
