During a public gathering in Boleng, Siang district, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein addressed concerns surrounding the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project.
He clarified that the project, declared a National Project in 2008, is crucial for national security, particularly in light of China’s plans to construct a 60,000 MW dam on the Tsangpo River, which could pose significant risks to downstream communities.
Mein emphasized that the project will bring numerous benefits, including flood control, water storage, irrigation, navigation, and power generation. He assured the public that the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) is solely for the safety of personnel and equipment during survey operations.
He explained that the project will undergo a rigorous process, including public hearings, to ensure that the concerns of local communities are addressed. He also outlined plans for robust compensation and rehabilitation measures for affected villages, including the development of model villages with improved healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
Mein emphasized that the project will not adversely affect the region’s demography, as temporary labor camps will be established and workers will leave the state upon project completion. He urged the public to support the project and engage in the process constructively.
The Deputy Chief Minister also highlighted the formation of a committee under the leadership of former Minister Tamiyo Taga to educate the public about the project’s benefits and dispel misinformation.
Mein reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Arunachal Pradesh, calling for unity and collaboration to ensure that the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project brings significant benefits to the people of the state and the region.
